Experts discuss social resilience as the next post crises

1st Workshop on Social Resilience

4-5 March 2010, Tokyo Japan


4 March 2010 ( Tokyo ) - Experts gathered in Tokyo for two-day (4-5 March 2010) workshop to discuss measures to strengthen social resilience in the Asia-Pacific region. The meeting was convened by the Japan Committee for pacific Economic Cooperation and the State Secretary for Foreign Affairs of Japan.

Experts and officials discussed how to make the region's societies more robust and resilient against economic crises. The workshop consisted of five main sessions including macroeconomic analysis, pension system, medical/ health care, unemployment insurance system, and carbon reduction.

The results of the workshop series will be documented and finalized in time for the APEC Summit scheduled for November 2010 in Yokohama.

27 January 2010 (Hong Kong, China SAR) - Although many of the Asia-Pacific economies seem to be now on their paths to recovery since the large-scale economic crisis hit the region in 2008, the domestic business environment and prospects for international free trade still remain uncertain for most. Dr. William Fung, Managing Director of Li & Fung Group and former Chair of PECC, spoke of the persisting threat of protectionism amid concerns about decline in economic growth and trade.

This publication is the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council’s fourth State of the Region report.It includes the key findings of a PECC task force on the global economic crisis, the results of a survey of close to 400 opinion-leaders from twenty-one Asia-Pacificeconomies, and an update of our index of economic integration in the region. This report includes the results of a survey conducted by PECC of regional opinion-leaders on issues confronting the region.
This survey was conducted in October 2009 and its findings represent the views of the community most actively engaged in the regional cooperation process. The final component of this report is an index of regional economic integration.

Advice to APEC: Stay Focused on Crisis, but Get Ready for a Post-Crisis World


11 November 2009 (Singapore) - APEC leaders meeting in Singapore later this week have been sent a clear message from Asia Pacific opinion-leaders: It is too soon to exit from the
expansionary policies that were put in place over the last year in response to the global
economic crisis. “Continued action on the economic crisis” was at the top of a list of suggested
priorities for APEC, followed by “regulation of the financial sector”, “restarting the Doha process”,“climate change and the Copenhagen Deal”, and “reducing the cost of doing business”.
The survey of nearly 400 opinion-leaders from business, government, think tanks, and civil
society was conducted by the Pacific Economic Cooperation Council (PECC) in October, and is part of PECC's annual State of the Region report.

Mongolia becomes full member of Pacific Economic Cooperation Council

Mongolia has been unanimously approved as a full member of Pacific Economic Cooperation Council during the PECC Standing Committee meeting held on July 24-25, 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand.

In August 2008, a press conference was called to media by the Mr. Odkhuu Durzee, MP and the Chariman of MONPECC, Mr. Narankhuu Khalzkhuu, Minister of Industry and Commerce and Vice-Chairman of MONPECC, and Mr. Jargalsaikhan Dambadarjaa, Secretary General of MONPECC. The press conference was held in the Press room of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Mongolia had been an associate member since 2000 and had regularly been participating in the activities of the PECC. MONPECC has been making efforts to establish business contacts between Mongolian business communities and potential business partners of the Asia – Pacific region and provide them with information on business and investment opportunities in Mongolia.

MONPECC seeks to expand its Government, Business, and Research councils and remain actively committed to PECC and APEC processes.
